It took longer than usual for Nassau County election results to come in this year than it has in previous elections, due apparently to the new electronic voting machine system that was recently implemented.

The anticipated nationwide wave to sweep out incumbents didn’t sweep Baldwin on Election Day as all five occupied seats remained under the control of their current residents. The one vacant position, abdicated by Robert Barra (R) in May amidst health concerns, was in the 14th assembly district, and even that seat went to the more experienced candidate -- Brian Curran, who had served as mayor of Lynbrook since 2007. Curran ran against Valley Stream resident Dermond Thomas and won handily with some 60 percent of the vote.

Despite an omission in a New York Newsday story about Race to the Top funding for area schools, the Baldwin Union Free School District was in fact awarded RTTT funding in the amount of $104,250. According to Baldwin school sources, Newsday’s failure to include the allocation in its coverage caused some parents and community members to conclude the district had not been awarded any money at all.
