Baldwin Senior High School turned another page in its history on Sunday, bidding farewell to this year’s graduates. This class, as pointed out by its president, Justin Mahoney, in his address, achieved many things: The girl’s basketball team won the Long Island championship, the boy’s track and field team won the county title, and academic and artistic achievements were far too numerous to mention. more
They may not yet have mastered trigonometry, the periodic table of elements or even, in some cases, subtraction, but the kindergarten class of 2011 is undeniably on its way to the academic elite. The last two weeks saw both St. Christopher’s School and the Baldwin Nursery School award capped-and-gowned kiddies diplomas for completing their first full year of school. An occasionally baffled procession of youngsters received their accreditations amicably as flashbulbs popped and eyes got misty. Unsubstantiated reports indicate a great deal of ice cream may have been enjoyed as well. more
Valedictorian Michael Schroeder Michael is a National Achievement Finalist and scholarship winner, a National Merit Commended Student, an AP Scholar with Distinction and a Literary Laureate. He is also the recipient of the Dartmouth Book Club Award, the Mildred Curie Award in Foreign Language and a Long Island Math Conference Scholarship Award. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the English, Foreign Language, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science and Tri-M Music Honor Societies. Michael served as president of the National Honor Society and vice president of Tri-M, the Chamber Orchestra and Youth for Political Awareness. He will attend Harvard in the fall. more
This year marked the 10th anniversary of Baldwin Senior High School’s extremely successful mentoring program. At an event attended by some 300 people on June 9 in the high school gymnasium, parents, mentors, mentees, faculty members, administrators and local legislators gathered to share their memories and observations. The fun-filled and at times emotional meeting featured speeches from both mentors and mentees who addressed their trials and success stories. more

Seventh-grade sports might have to be eliminated. The nine-period day might be reduced to eight. And teachers might have to be let go. After that, no one’s sure what might happen, but school districts will have to keep cutting. more

Laura Williams will become the newest member of the Baldwin Board of Education in early July, replacing incumbent Anne Hannon, whom Williams defeated in the May 17 election. A mother of two daughters who attend Plaza School — Claire, 11, and Julie, 5 — and a third, Molly, who is 3, Williams is a former education reporter for the Daily News and the New York Post, and edited the Baldwin and Oceanside Heralds in 1998-99. She has lived in Baldwin since 1997. more
“Yikes!” said Little Orphan Annie in excitement. “Yikes!” says the Principal’s Office. My recent column “Beating three common writing errors” drew more feedback than usual. It’s a pleasant surprise; as I’ve said repeatedly over the past six years, the value of writing good English has declined, but readers seem intrigued by the “writing quiz” feature that I sprinkle in several times a year. As a matter of fact, I have now added the “grammar policeman” to the rotation of features on my WCBS 880 spot “Eye on Education.” more
Baldwin residents voted yesterday to ratify the school board's 2011-2012 budget proposal and also elected a new school board member: former education reporter Laura Williams. Carl Williams, who was running unopposed, won the seat on the library board. more
