It is time for leaders to take strong, firm stances. That goes for lawmakers in Washington and Albany, our county, town and village representatives and the elected members of our own boards of education.

On April 19, 1969, members of Cornell University’s Afro-American Society occupied Willard Straight Hall on the Ithaca campus to protest a litany of perceived racial injustices after a cross was burned outside Wari House, a cooperative for African-American female students. During the occupation, AAS members smuggled in rifles and bandoliers of ammunition.

The schools in the north of Baldwin were locked down briefly this afternoon as a precaution while police pursued suspects in the area. “The Brookside, Plaza, Lennox, Shubert, and Senior High Schools were locked down from approximately 12:45 until 2:00 this afternoon,” said District Spokesperson Cristina Schmohl.

Budget meetings are rarely upbeat affairs, but the mood at the Baldwin Board of Education meeting Jan. 9 at the Plaza School was unusually somber. Despite the best efforts of a student orchestra that demonstrated the success of district music programs, the focus of the evening soon turned to crunching numbers. And the outlook was not rosy.
