A long-standing tradition of nearly 70 years, Intramural Night was a rousing success over the weekend as hundreds of parents and school supporters gathered in the Baldwin Senior High School gym. The occasionally raucous crowd thrilled as freshmen, sophomore, junior and senior classes competed in disciplines including aerobics, stunts and dance. The venerable Ethel Kloberg created both Intramural Night and the upcoming Sportsnight to celebrate the efforts of young women not involved in traditional sports. Despite an omission in a New York Newsday story about Race to the Top funding for area schools, the Baldwin Union Free School District was in fact awarded RTTT funding in the amount of $104,250. According to Baldwin school sources, Newsday’s failure to include the allocation in its coverage caused some parents and community members to conclude the district had not been awarded any money at all. more

Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano, a Republican from Bethpage, has proposed a water use fee in the county’s 2011 budget.
