84-year-old runner struck by Jeep in Baldwin

Injured man in serious condition, police say "no criminality" involved

Nassau County Police detectives reported on Thursday, July 19, that an 84-year-old male runner was struck by a jeep in Baldwin. According to a release from the NCPD’s First Squad, the incident occurred around 7:43 a.m. when a 54-year-old male, driving a 2002 Jeep, backed out of his driveway on Bertha Drive and struck the older man, who was out jogging. Police say the runner fell after being hit by the car and smacked his head on the pavement. The injured man was transported to the hospital with what police called a “serious head injury.” He is listed in critical condition.

The NC Highway Patrol responded to the scene of the accident and gave the driver a breathalyzer test, which was negative. Police said safety and brake checks were also performed on the vehicle revealing no problems. Detectives have said there was “no apparent criminality” in the incident.
