Adelphi University has received a national award recognizing its efforts to support the mental health and well-being of students and employees.
The Garden City university was named a recipient of Insight Into Academia magazine’s 2026 Excellence in Mental Health and Well-Being Award. Adelphi is among 38 colleges and universities that will be featured in the magazine’s September issue.
The award recognizes programs and initiatives aimed at advancing mental health and wellness on college campuses.
“The culture of care we have built at Adelphi goes far beyond academic and professional development — it requires fostering a community that recognizes the mental health challenges students face and actively supports them at every level,” Adelphi President Michael Balboni said.
Among the programs highlighted was Adelphi’s Mindfulness Center, which opened in 2022 and provides a quiet space for members of the university community. The center offers guided meditation, yoga classes and annual wellness retreats.
Adelphi also provides counseling services for students facing psychological, behavioral or learning challenges at its campuses and centers. Scheduled appointments and walk-in crisis counseling are available weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Services include individual and group therapy, substance education, wellness workshops and referrals to additional resources.
The university’s Achan Family Interfaith Center also provides space for worship, fellowship and dialogue among people of different religious traditions.
“We know that institutions are not always recognized for their dedication to and prioritizing mental health and well-being services and support for their students and employees,” Lenore Pearlstein, owner and publisher of Insight Into Academia, said. “We are proud to honor the colleges and universities who are standouts as the need for these resources continues to grow substantially.”
Balboni said the university plans to continue making mental health resources and wellness programs a priority.
“This honor from Insight Into Academia reflects the ongoing work and dedication of our care teams to provide accessible mental health resources and wellness initiatives, which will continue to be a focus on our campus,” he said.
