More than 300 fifth graders from across the Baldwin Union Free School District gathered for the district's annual Unity Day, an event designed to help students build friendships before entering Baldwin Middle School in the fall.
Held on the Baldwin High School athletic fields and in the gymnasium, the event brought together students from the district's elementary schools for a day of team-building activities and friendly competition. Participants took part in kickball, basketball and soccer while competing on color-coded teams, including blue, orange, red, black, purple, green and gray.
The annual tradition gives incoming middle school students an opportunity to meet classmates from other elementary schools before the start of the new school year, helping ease the transition to sixth grade.
Baldwin High School students volunteered throughout the event, serving as team leaders and assisting with activities. Their support helped organize the day's events while providing younger students with positive role models.
District officials said Unity Day reflects the sense of community within the Baldwin school district and reinforces the importance of helping students make a smooth transition from elementary school to middle school.
