Baldwin High School brought back Baldwin Illuminated, which was the first school district to host this event in the country in 2020.

Dozens gathered at the Baldwin High School to see artwork illuminated on the building. Paintings, drawings, and poetry were just some of the art that was projected. This event highlighted work created by Baldwin students.

“Baldwin Illuminated is a one-of-a-kind projection mapping event showcasing our student’s work,” Superintendent of Baldwin School District Shari Camhi said. “Projection mapping refers to a technology that allows you to project onto building surfaces. Cities such as Napa, California, amusement parks, including Disney World, concerts, art shows and big events have been using this effect for years. We are proudly the first school district to host such an event.”

Camhi went on to explain that some of the artwork like the poetry and poems were narrated by the students. This event was a big hit in the district in 2020. Camhi said that other school districts across the country followed in Baldwin’s footsteps and hosted their own “Illuminated” event.

“A few years ago, while traveling in Napa, California, I attended an outdoor light show using the same technique, where images and stories were projected onto the building exteriors at a local art exhibit,” Camhi said. “I thought, ‘If they can do this, so can Baldwin. What a source of pride for teachers, parents, and community.’”

When asked what the importance is in continuing to support art events like this one, Camhi mentioned that she believes in the concept of “students as producers.” She believes that the Baldwin students should be deeply engaged in learning and creating a more meaningful and relevant experience. At the Baldwin School District, Camhi is a huge supporter of “nurturing the whole child.”

“Art, in particular, has been shown to offer countless benefits for our children, and our students are incredibly talented,” Camhi said. “We are happy to nurture this talent and give students a venue to grow and blossom in this area. Offering unique events, like Baldwin Illuminated, allows this to happen, while letting our community members see firsthand the beauty and impact of strong creative arts programs in our schools.”

Camhi said that the goal of this project was to showcase the students’ work in a creative, innovative, and memorable way. She hopes to continue this as a Baldwin tradition for years to come.
