Baldwin String Festival unites musicians across all grade levels

The Baldwin Union Free School District’s String Festival struck a powerful chord this year by bringing together student musicians from every level of the district. In a rare and ambitious collaboration, elementary, middle and high school students performed side-by-side — an experience that few Long Island districts have attempted.

Held during Music in our Schools Month in March, the festival celebrated not only musical talent but also the strength of Baldwin’s performing arts program. The highlight of the evening was the all-district finale, where students of varying ages and skill levels from the elementary, middle and high schools united on one stage as a single orchestra.

“This year was special because this was the first time we attempted an all-district finale, in which all members, elementary through high school orchestra played on the stage at the same time,” the district’s director of fine and performing arts André Poprilo said. “This is not an easy feat musically or logistically, but it was a powerful moment for our students and a powerful demonstration of the strength of the program.”

Coordinating the performance required extensive planning, from aligning musical arrangements to managing rehearsal schedules across schools. The evening was made possible through the dedication and high level of instruction of music teachers Stephanie Muir of Baldwin High School, Noellia Nicotri of Baldwin Middle School, and Maia Nau of Meadow Elementary School.

The 2026 String Festival reflected the district’s commitment to arts education and innovative educational experiences.
