Boys’, girls’ hoops teams honored by Board of Ed

Capping a basketball season many regarded as perfect — the Baldwin High School boys’ team won the Long Island title, and the girls claimed their third straight county crown — the Baldwin Board of Education celebrated the Bruins’ championship teams of 2012 on April 18.

Officials from the Town Council as well as the State Assembly were on hand to offer words of praise for the players and coaches, and people who were instrumental in the success of the boys’ and girls’ teams lavished accolades on the most accomplished collection of players Baldwin has yet produced.

“Every season I challenge our athletes to leave a legacy,” said BHS Director of Athletics Ed Ramirez. “I say, ‘Look at the banners that hang in our school and try to become a part of that.’ No teams have ever stepped up to the challenge like these players.”

“This kind of success does not happen by accident,” said girls’ basketball coach Tom Catapano. “This group worked extremely hard both in and out of season.”

“This was a special group,” added boys’ coach Darius Buton. “You will be missed.”

After the coaches’ remarks, the players from each team were awarded certificates of appreciation from the New York State Public High School Athletic Association and then celebrated over refreshments with their parents and members of the Board of Education.
