A Brooklyn man was arrested following an attempted $20,000 computer scam that targeted a 68-year-old Baldwin resident on Sept. 21 at 10:30 a.m.
The victim received a fraudulent pop-up message on his computer claiming his device had been compromised, according to Nassau County Police. Police said the message instructed him to call a displayed phone number. He was informed that he needed to withdraw cash from his bank account to protect his funds.
The man went to his bank and withdrew $20,000. After making the withdrawal, however, he suspected he was being scammed and contacted police.
Following an investigation, police arrested Biaodi Jiang, 50, of Brooklyn, without incident. Police did not provide additional information about how investigators identified Jiang or where he was arrested.
Jiang has been charged with third-degree attempted grand larceny. He was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Sept. 22.
