Copiague man charged in $66,000 check fraud involving Baldwin credit union

A Copiague man was arrested Sept. 1 after allegedly depositing fraudulent checks in Baldwin and Plandome Manor in a scheme involving about $66,000, Nassau County police said.

Richard Almonte, 37, allegedly deposited fraudulent checks at FourLeaf Federal Credit Union, at 1800 Grand Ave. in Baldwin, on Jan. 29 and at Capital One, at 27 Gulls Cove in Plandome Manor, on Jan. 7, according to detectives.

Police said the checks were valued at about $66,000 and resulted in financial losses to a Nassau County resident and FourLeaf Federal Credit Union.

Following an investigation by the Nassau County Police Department’s Electronics Squad, Almonte was located and arrested Sept. 1, police said.

He was charged with two counts of third-degree grand larceny, attempted second-degree grand larceny and second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument.

Almonte was scheduled to be arraigned Sept. 2 at First District Court in Hempstead.
