Four ways to recycle smarter

Posted

1. Flatten cardboard boxes and, when possible, flip them inside out. If you recycle a box emblazoned with images of a snazzy new item, it will only advertize to potential thieves that you have expensive appliances or electronics in your home.

2. Cut the identifying information off your boxes and store it. This will not only safeguard your identity, but if you ever need the model or serial number of your new dishwasher, you won’t have to crawl under the counter to find it.

3. Shred, cut up or tear up all bank statements, receipts and credit card statements and then disguise them. Putting the shredded material into a paper bag and stapling it closed will not only camouflage the presence of sensitive data, it will also keep the paper from blowing away and creating litter.

4. Despite your best efforts, your identity may still be at risk. Keep an eye on your bank and credit card statements and monitor your credit reports regularly.
