Meadow Elementary School second-grader, Sadie Brunetti, was recently recognized by the New York State Parent Teacher Association (PTA) “Award of Merit” in the Film Production category for her entry “Trash to Toy.” “Trash to Toy” is a moving video showing a girl who turns a piece of garbage into a brand new toy, in the end holding up a sign that reads: “I Will Change the World by Recycling.” Brunetti’s interpretation of the PTA Reflections theme “I Will Change the World By....” impressed the judges at several levels making her entry among 481 of the very best statewide.

In addition, Baldwin Middle School seventh grader, Alexandra Francois, has now for the fourth time been named a winner of the Nassau Region PTA Reflections competition in the Dance Choreography category. She is known in the community for her ballet talent and active involvement with the organization, Brown Girls Do Ballet, which promotes diversity in the arts by providing annual scholarships, a mentor network, and community programs to empower young girls.

The National PTA Reflections program provides opportunities for recognition and access to the arts which boosts student confidence. The 50+ year old program helps students explore their own thoughts feelings and ideas, develop artistic literacy, increase confidence, and find a love from learning that will help them become more successful in the arts, school, and in life.

More than 300,000 students in Pre-K through Grade 12 create and submit original works of art in the areas of Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Music Composition, Photography, and Visual Arts. Based on State PTA rules and guidelines, these works of art may be submitted for state and national level awards and recognition opportunities.

Students submit their completed works of art in one or all of the available arts categories: Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Music Composition, Photography, Visual Arts. Student winners from the local level have the opportunity to move up through their district, region, council, and state PTA programs to the national level.
