Relay for Life is more than just a walk. According to its official website, the event brings communities together to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost and raise funds to fight cancer.

Relay for Life is a global event and the largest fundraising initiative of the American Cancer Society, supporting its mission of fighting “Every Cancer, Every Life” through funding research and providing services for those diagnosed with cancer and their caregivers.

Each Relay for Life reflects the community that hosts it. In Baldwin, the event has traditionally emphasized community involvement, including participation from local students. From 2009 through 2013, the Baldwin relay was held at Baldwin High School. In 2014, the event moved to Baldwin Park, but was discontinued after 2016 because of declining participation.

Relay for Life events are organized around three themes: Celebrate, Remember and Fight Back. The Celebrate portion honors cancer survivors and caregivers, often beginning with laps around the track. The Remember portion centers on the Luminaria ceremony, during which luminaria bags are placed around the track and illuminated in honor of survivors and in memory of those lost to cancer.

The Fight Back portion takes place toward the end of the event, highlighting the total amount of money raised and reaffirming the community’s commitment to continue supporting the fight against cancer. Throughout the relay, participants also hear from cancer survivors and guest speakers and take part in entertainment and activities.

Relay for Life of Baldwin returned in 2020. Since the community’s first relay in 2009, participants have raised nearly $500,000 for the American Cancer Society.

The 2026 Relay for Life of Baldwin is scheduled for June 13 at Baldwin Park and is open to all members of the community.

“Last year was a challenging year, but we’re ready to continue the fight against cancer, as long as it takes,” said Miguel Melendez, a member of the Relay for Life of Baldwin leadership team, in an email to the Herald.

Residents interested in supporting the effort can join the Relay for Life committee, which meets at the Baldwin Public Library. Community members can also participate in the Relay First Lap at noon on Jan. 10 at the Baldwin High School track. The event marks the symbolic start of the relay season, bringing together relayers, cancer survivors and caregivers for a lap around the track.
