The motto of Francis X. Hegarty Elementary School in Island Park is “Together we are better.” In East Meadow, Barnum Woods Elementary School’s motto is “We use our head, heart and hands in all we do.”
Last Friday, the two schools backed up those words at a ceremony in the central courtyard of Barnum Woods, where school officials donated $18,500 to the Hegarty School, which was devastated by Hurricane Sandy.

After several months of fundraising, Barnum Woods Elementary School officials plan to donate $18,500 to the Francis X. Hegarty Elementary School in Island Park, which was devastated by last October’s Hurricane Sandy. The majority of the funds were raised by Barnum Woods students, who amassed more than $13,000 by selling chocolate bars last spring.

Members of the East Meadow School District’s Parent Teacher Associations work year round to advocate for children. The PTA Council — a coalition of the district’s nine school PTAs and SEPTA — raises thousands of dollars annually during its Founders Day Dinner and the money is used to fund dozens of scholarships to graduating seniors at W.T. Clarke and East Meadow high schools.

Hofstra University has been awarded a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration grant of $75,000 to remove debris accumulated during Superstorm Sandy from a local salt marsh that is used regularly for research and educational projects. Among the professors spearheading the project is Dr. Russell Burke, of Bellmore.

As the East Meadow School District welcomed students back on Wednesday, school officials geared up for another year that will see changes on a number of fronts. Technological and security upgrades, new personnel and the continued implementation of the Common Core curriculum are among the new measures students will see. The Herald asked Superintendent Louis DeAngelo to preview the upcoming year, and how those changes will come into play.
