Hundreds of cars zip around the curved residential street — where the speed limit is 30 miles per hour — to avoid Hempstead Turnpike on the way home from work or on the way to the Roosevelt Field Mall.

For the fourth consecutive year, the 16-mile stretch of Hempstead Turnpike in Nassau County was named the deadliest road for pedestrians in the tristate area by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign. The 2012 report, “Most Dangerous Roads for Walking,” was released on March 7.

The Town of Hempstead’s Board of Zoning Appeals has adjourned two meetings on the matter for various reasons, and the next attempt to hear the variance case is scheduled for March 7.

The Town of Hempstead Department of Water is adding a filtration system to two wells in East Meadow after traces of volatile organic compounds were discovered. The project on Prospect Avenue began last August and will be complete before peak water consumption season this summer, according to the town.
