At a Board of Education meeting on Oct 22, East Meadow School District trustees voted unanimously to extend the contract of Leon Campo, who has served as the district’s interim superintendent since July, until June 30, 2017.

The move was done, said Board President Joseph Parisi, to add a level of consistency within the district as it continues to implement its first year of full-day kindergarten, and provide trustees with more time to choose their next permanent superintendent. Initially, Parisi had said that the plan was for Campo to remain superintendent only through the 2015-16 school year.

“The East Meadow School District is moving forward with reconnecting, rebuilding and reuniting, but the consensus is that a second year is required to put East Meadow in an optimal position in anticipation of hiring a new superintendent,” said Parisi. “The progress that Mr. Campo and staff have made has been excellent, but work remains that will require Mr. Campo’s leadership talents.”

In its search for a new superintendent, the Board has interviewed two firms to lead the district through the process. Upon selection of the finalist, a timeline will be developed to better inform the community of its next steps.
