Peter Natale, a junior at East Meadow High School, was selected Student of the Month at the Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Center for December 2010.

Peter is enrolled in the Architectural Drafting Program at East Meadow High School and was honored with a Certificate of Excellence at the Career & Technical Center. In class, he is currently learning how to create and modify floor plans, as well as drafting for carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, and landscape design.

Brain power

Barnum Woods students, from kindergarten through fifth grade, recently participated in assemblies entitled the “Brain Challenge,” a program sponsored by the PTA. These were simulated, “live” game shows complete with hosts, referees, lighting, electronic scoring, music and all of the elements of the most popular favorites. The programs combined elements of “Jeopardy,” “College Bowl” and “Beat the Clock.” An array of questions included topics covering character education, content area studies, team building and fun challenges. All students had an opportunity to participate in the game shows, and also cheered on their teachers who had rounds of their own during the assemblies.

Jumping for a good cause

Third, fourth and fifth-graders from Parkway Elementary School participated in the 2011 Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser, sponsored by the American Heart Association, on Feb. 15. The students collected donations within the community to aid in the AHA’s mission to wipe out heart disease. In the weeks preceding the event, the students learned how exercise and a healthy diet could prevent heart disease, practiced rope-jumping skills and designed posters for their jump rope teams.

A ‘Show of Love’

McVey welcomed a special presenter, Joe Trionfero, who reached audiences of all ages during his assembly, “The Show of Love.” Members of the audience learned to listen, not only with their ears, but also with their eyes and heart. Also, children learned how to communicate without words and how body language conveys messages. Another lesson for the students was learning how it takes courage to stand up to enemies but how much it takes to stand up to friends.
