District 13 students have a harvest party at farm

Posted

Valley Stream district 13 students visited the Crossroads Farm, operated by the Nassau County Land Trust, as they came full circle on a planting project a year in the making. Students had originally been tasked with planting lettuce seeds in a nursery pot at school. Those pots were eventually taken to be transplanted over to the nonprofit’s organic, 5-acre vegetable farm, where students were able to watch their lettuce leaves grow through weekly video updates courtesy of the Crossroads Farm staff team.

Now, students were able to see and pick their finished creation, which they turned into a salad for their enjoyment during their harvest party at the farm. They also were treated to the farm’s fresh honey, drank mint tea, picked fresh flowers, squeezed fresh orange juice, and ate bread with butter and chives.

“Valley Stream district 13 students learn at an early age about how agriculture impacts the world around them through their work with Crossroads Farm,” said the district’s media liaison Grace Kwon. “They learn about the growing cycle and how to cultivate crops throughout their educational and interactive hands-on experiences offered by the district.”
