Man arrested for setting fire to hospital bed

A Levittown man was arrested for reckless endangerment while waiting for treatment in the emergency room at Nassau University Medical Center on July 13, police said.

According to the Arson Bomb Squad, Patrick Callahan, 26, became “agitated and uncooperative” and had to be restrained by hospital staff. Callahan then removed a lighter from his pocket and set fire to the bed sheets and mattress he was lying on.

The small fire created smoky conditions, but was quickly extinguished by NUMC staff, police said.

There were 52 patients, visitors and staff in the emergency room during the incident, but no injuries were reported.

Callahan is charged with first-degree reckless endangerment, second-degree criminal mischief and fifth-degree arson. Police also said there was a Nassau County warrant out for his arrest for a disorderly conduct incident on July 19.
