East Meadow gathers in remembrance for Memorial Day

Rain forced the cancellation of East Meadow’s Memorial Day parade on Monday, but veterans, families, civic groups and residents still gathered for the community’s ceremony of remembrance.

The annual observance, organized with support from Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2736, Jewish War Veterans Post 652 and American Legion Post 1082, honored the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. armed forces. Though the parade did not step off because of the weather, the ceremony continued with the same solemn purpose at Veterans Memorial Park.

Memorial Day festivities have been organized by Dolores Rome and Liz Fries for 27 years.

Instead of the customary march through the neighborhood, attendees gathered directly at Veterans Memorial Park, where the Memorial Day service paid tribute to all veterans and centered the day on remembrance.

Community organizations still took part in the observance, with many purchasing wreaths to honor veterans during the ceremony. Their presence, alongside residents and local groups, underscored the strong community support for East Meadow’s annual Memorial Day tribute.

Wreaths were placed at the veterans memorial in a quiet and formal moment of reflection, and organizers thanked Liz Fries and Dolores Rome for their work with the veterans and the Town of Hempstead in helping make the service possible despite the weather.

Even without the parade, the ceremony drew a strong turnout and served as the day’s final tribute, thanking those who attended while honoring the veterans who paid the ultimate price for the nation’s freedom.

Although the parade was canceled because of rain, residents, veterans and local organizations still came together for the memorial service, preserving the spirit and purpose of the community’s Memorial Day observance.
