East Meadow reflects on 23rd anniversary of Sept. 11

Across the U.S., ceremonies paid tribute to the thousands of lives lost on Sept. 11, and those who continue to perish from related cancers and illnesses.

In East Meadow, the East Meadow Fire Department held its annual remembrance ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park on Prospect Avenue. The park has a memorial, erected by the East Meadow Kiwanis in 2014, featuring a 1,800-pound marble slab, with etching of the twin towers, and steal beam from ground zero.

Sevel local residents died in the terrorist attacks — four who worked in the World Trade Center, two firefighers and a police officer.

In Eisenhower Park, Nassau County remembered the fallen at a moving ceremony at the Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre. The memorial ceremony featured a musical tribute, performed by internationalist vocalist Chris Macchio.
