East Meadow School District sparks safety with Bowling Green students

Members of the East Meadow Fire Department hosted an engaging and educational presentation for students last month in the East Meadow School District’s Extended School Year program. This program provides additional educational opportunities for students with special needs beyond the regular school year, ensuring continuous learning and support during the summer months.

Held in the cafeteria of Bowling Green Elementary School, the event focused on teaching essential fire safety skills. Firefighters arrived in full uniform and gear, giving students a firsthand look at how they appear when responding to a house fire. The students were also given an exciting tour of a real fire truck, where the firefighters demonstrated how to use a fire hose.

Meeting firefighters helps children learn essential fire safety rules in a memorable way, and understanding how to prevent fires and what to do in an emergency can save lives. When children see firefighters in full gear, it helps them become familiar with the equipment and appearance of firefighters. In an emergency, this familiarity can reduce fear and anxiety, helping kids feel safer and more comfortable approaching firefighters for help.

In appreciation of the firefighters’ efforts, the students presented them with handmade thank-you cards. The East Meadow School District expressed gratitude to the local firefighters for dedicating their time to educating the students on crucial fire safety and prevention measures.
