With snow beginning to fall, and a winter storm warning in effect on Tuesday night into the morning, East Meadow School District officials decided to close school on Wednesday.

"Due to anticipated inclement weather conditions, the East Meadow school district will be closed Wednesday, Jan. 12," said a statement released by the district on Tuesday night. "All after school and evening activities scheduled to take place in our buildings on Wednesday, Jan. 12 are cancelled as well. Stay safe and enjoy the day."

Parents began receiving calls about the closure at around 9 p.m.

The district closely monitored the snow as it made its way toward the area. Forecasters predicted more than a foot of snow on some parts of Long Island. It was expected to begin after 7 p.m.

East Meadow School Superintendent Louis DeAngelo said that a decision to close schools would like be made on Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning if the prediction of heavy snow comes to fruition as forecasted.

“We will try to make the call as early as possible,” DeAngelo said on Tuesday afternoon.
