Incumbents Reelected

Though most incumbents representing East Meadow and Salisbury won convincingly on Election Day, the balance of power in the state Senate remained in question until December. When the close calls were decided in court, the Republicans officially retook the Senate.

Tom McKevitt defeated Democratic challenger Tom Devaney of East Williston by a count of 23,513 to 14,313.

Michael Montesano, a Republican from Glen Head, beat the Democrat, Leon Hart, 20,740 to 12,249 in the 15th Assembly District, which includes Salisbury and parts of East Meadow.

David McDonough of Merrick, who received 24,039 votes, 11,195 votes than his Democratic opponent, John Brooks of Seaford, in the 19th Assembly District received, which includes a portion of southern East Meadow.

Also, in the 18th A.D., which includes a portion of eastern East Meadow, Democratic incumbent Earlene Hooper of Hempstead won over her GOP challenger, Derek Partee, 19,674 to 3,953.

Sen. Kemp Hannon won handily in his bid for re-election in the 6th Senate District, which includes East Meadow and Salisbury. The Republican from Garden City defeated Democrat Francesca Carlow, 43,880 votes to 28,736.

In the 8th Senate District, which includes parts of southern East Meadow, Charles Fuschillo won convincingly over Democrat challenger Carol Gordon, 46,888 to 23,386.

Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-Mineola) held on to her seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. She defeated Francis Becker of Lynbrook, 89,828 to 77,483 in what was a heated race.

A farm of contention

The only farm left in East Meadow will remain a farm. But it appears there will be new tenants.

Cornell Cooperative Extension is expected to move its environmental operations from its small quarters in Eisenhower Park to the more spacious property on Merrick Avenue and Luddington Road. The organization plans to transform the 2.5-acre property into an agricultural hub that combines farming with education, community gardening and research.

CCE is an educational, nonprofit organization that conducts research and offers educational programs focusing on the environment and agriculture.
