How local teams fared over the summer

Fillies sizzle

The East Meadow Fillies 12-year-old travel softball team recently finished another impressive summer season.
   
For the third consecutive year, the team won the district championship. In 2009, as the 11-year-old squad, this team of Fillies won sectionals and competed in the state championship tournament. Though they did not get to the states this year, the Fillies capped off their season with two tournament championships. The 12-year-old squad, coached by Mike Halkitis, won the Glen Cove and the Summer Sizzle (hosted by East Meadow) tournaments in August.

Rattlers take home Mayors trophy

The Salisbury Rattlers 14U squad won the Glen Cove Mayors Trophy Tournament in thrilling fashion.
   
On Aug. 19, the Rattlers defeated the hometown Glen Cove Cardinals 6-5 in extra innings, thanks to a walk-off single by Thomas Brengel in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring Jesse Russo from second base.

Vets Park cheerleaders compete at Hofstra

On Aug. 12, the Veterans Park Cheerleading and Kickline teams participated in the Town of Hempstead's Cheerleading and Kickline competition.It took place at Hofstra’s Mack Arena. Many of the town's parks and pools participated. Cheerleaders can join at age five and Kickline starts at age eight. The senior teams (ages 12-16) compete. The Juniors (ages 8-11) and the Mascots (ages 5-7) also perform.Veterans Park senior teams took second place both in cheerleading and in kickline.

Little Leaguers take on Maryland

The East Meadow Baseball 10U baseball team traveled to Maryland on Labor Day weekend to play at the famous Cal Ripken Stadium.
   
They had the honor of playing two games on the main Cal Ripken Sr. Field. The stadium holds 2,000 fans, concession stands, announcers, press boxes and dugouts with full facilities.
  
Though the squad did not win the tournament, it hung in with some of the most talented competition in the region.
