East Meadow Library is kicking off the new year with a lineup of engaging January programs designed to inform, inspire and entertain adult patrons. From cultivating greener thumbs to sharing plenty of laughs, these in-person events offer welcoming ways for community members to gather, learn and enjoy the season together.

  1. A gardening guru brngs blooms to winter

Even as winter settles in, East Meadow Library will help patrons start dreaming of spring with “The Plant Man” Paul Levine’s talk on great flowering plants. Known throughout Long Island for his approachable style and deep horticultural knowledge, Levine shares practical advice on choosing, growing and maintaining flowering plants for home gardens. The program is geared toward adults of all experience levels, from beginners planning their first beds to seasoned gardeners looking to expand their blooms. Held Jan. 5 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the Community Room, the lecture offers timely inspiration for planning the seasons ahead. Registration is required, and seating is limited.

  1. A Sunday concert explores the rhythms of bachata

East Meadow Library will bring the warmth and romance of Caribbean music indoors with a special Sunday concert featuring Rosa Reyes of the Los Amigos del Amargue ensemble. During the Jan. 11 program, Reyes will both discuss and demonstrate bachata, a guitar-driven music style that originated in the Dominican Republic and is known for its emotional storytelling and intimate rhythms. The program, held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the Community Room, is open to adults. Registration is required, with initial registration limited to East Meadow Library cardholders.

  1. Start the year laughing with local comedy

Laughter takes center stage later in the month when comedian Mark Brier returns for “Laughs at the Library” on Jan. 26 from 1 to 3 p.m. A familiar face on the Long Island comedy scene, Brier — voted Best Comic on Long Island by Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s Best of Long Island — brings along a cast of fellow local comics for an afternoon of stand-up. The in-person show promises lighthearted fun and community connection, with laughter billed as the best medicine. Registration is required, with 50 seats available.
