The Nassau County District Attorney released the following information on Thursday afternoon, June 30, 2011:

Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice announced today that a Brooklyn man has been convicted by a jury for his role in the robbery of an East Meadow gas station in May 2010 that resulted in the theft of $194,000.

It took a jury three hours to convict Troy Motayne, 35, of Robbery in the First Degree, Robbery in the Second Degree, Grand Larceny in the Second Degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, Criminal Mischief in the Fourth Degree, and False Personation. He faces up to 25 years in prison at his August 18 sentencing.

Rice said that on May 10, 2010 at approximately 11:38 a.m., Motayne and another man, Marvin Gay, broke into a Toyota Tundra that was parked at the Mobil on the Run gas station on Hempstead Turnpike in East Meadow. The truck’s owner, who was inside the station at the time of the robbery, was a courier collecting cash receipts from 17 gas stations owned by a management group. The East Meadow station was the last one on his route.

When the courier ran out of the station to try to stop Motayne and Gay, Motayne displayed what appeared to be the handle of a black handgun in his waistband and threatened to shoot him. The courier followed Motayne and Gay as they ran around the back of the gas station and into a waiting silver Cadillac driven by a third man, Ainsley Reynolds. The three men stole approximately $194,000 from the courier’s vehicle.

Motayne was arrested on June 6, 2010 after police were able to track him down from a partial license plate taken down by a witness and a subsequent investigation. Reynolds was arrested June 9, 2010 and Gay on June 29, 2010. Approximately $42,000 of the robbery’s proceeds has been recovered.

Reynolds pleaded guilty to Robbery in the First Degree and was sentenced to five years in prison on February 7, 2011. Gay’s case is still pending.

“We’re pleased that the jury was able to hold the defendant accountable for his crimes,” Rice said. “Thanks to the excellent work by members of my office and the Nassau County Police Department, Mr. Motayne is facing a very long time behind bars.”

Assistant District Attorney Christine Geier of the County Court Trial Bureau is prosecuting the case for the DA’s Office. Motayne is represented by Tony Collelueri, Esq.
