Pasquale Aiello, 81, who volunteered with the East Meadow Fire Deprtment for more than 30 years, died early Wednesday morning when a car he was driving swerved off the Northern State Parkway and struck a tree, police said.

Aiello was a former captain in the fire department, and was a member of Hook & Ladder Co. 1.

New York State police say the accident happened shortly before 5 a.m. near exit 42, westbound on the parkway.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office. No one else was in his car.

EMFD spokesman John O'Brien said Aiello had moved to Port Jefferson Station a few years ago. "We are all in a state of shock at this time," he said.
