An armed man barricaded himself inside his residence on Hull Street in East Meadow on April 17 as the Nassau County Police Department surrounded the area.

Genri Palacios-Acosta, 27, was involved in a verbal, physical and property-damaging domestic dispute with his mother and she called the police, authorities said.

According to Officer Daniel Danzi, “A mother called the police about her son at that location [who was] threatening to kill himself.”

After several hours of negotiating with police, Palacios-Acosta surrendered and was taken into custody. He was send to a local hospital for medical evaluation, authorities said.

The incident ended without injury to the occupant or emergency responders, he said.

The activity aroused much interest from neighbors. Residents of homes on Hull and Maitland streets between Powers and Harton avenues were evacuated while others emerged to share their wonder about what was happening in their neighborhood.

According to Melinda McGowan, who lives on the corner of Hull Street and Powers Avenue, police closed Hull and Maitland streets around 9:30 a.m. and they remained closed until after 5 p.m.

McGowan, who has been a member of the North Bellmore Fire Department for 16 years, said she heard on her scanner that a man had barricaded himself inside his residence and was armed with a knife.

The commotion also affected McVey Elementary School bus routes. McGowan received a phone call around 4 p.m. to pick up her first-grader from school. His route was cancelled for the day.

A Harton Avenue neighbor, who asked to remain unnamed, was unable to approach his home. He said he was standing around for a couple of hours and police did not know when he would be able to return home. “I just hope this thing ends soon,” he said.

The Nassau County Police Department had not issued any further information as of Tuesday evening.
