State recognizes East Meadow district with financial award

As leadership in Albany calls on local governing bodies to operate more efficiently, the East Meadow School District was awarded for doing just that.

Though East Meadow is among the hundreds of districts across the state that is anticipating deep cuts to state aid, it was included in a small group lauded for “administrative efficiency.”

According to calculations determined by the state, East Meadow ranked as the second most efficient school district in Nassau County when it comes to administrative costs. The East Meadow School District is slated to receive $226,000 in addition to its state aid package, officials said.

The district has been considered to have lower administrative staffs and costs in comparison to others on Long Island.

“Our East Meadow School District continues to be a district which spends one of the lowest percentages of its overall budget on administration,” said Louis DeAngelo, East Meadow’s superintendent of schools. “We are pleased to have our efforts in the administrative efficiency area recognized.” Administrators plan to include this information in upcoming presentations of the proposed school budgets.

The Board of Education was scheduled to meet on Thursday night at 7 p.m. for a work session, followed by the annual Budget Input Session at 8 p.m. At the Input Session, members of the public are invited to address the board on the topic of the proposed budget for 2011-12. All meetings are held at the Leon J. Campo Salisbury Center, located at 718 The Plain Road, Salisbury.
