Back to school

Three things East Meadow families should know this September

Posted

East Meadow students return to the classroom in September, kicking off a busy month of parent nights, college planning and community events across the district.

Here are three things East Meadow families should have on their radar as the 2026-27 school year gets underway.

  1. Back-to-school nights get underway

Students return for their first day of school Sept. 2, and families will have plenty of opportunities to get reacquainted with their schools throughout the month.

George McVey Elementary School will hold grade-level Meet the Teacher events Sept. 3, 8, 9, 10, 14 and 15. East Meadow and W.T. Clarke high schools will host Meet the Teacher Night Sept. 9 at 6:30 p.m.

Parkway Elementary School's Meet the Teacher Night is Sept. 15, while Woodland Middle School and W.T. Clarke Middle School will welcome families Sept. 17.

Parent organizations will also start meeting, including PTAs, PTSA groups, booster clubs and music and theater parent organizations. The Board of Education will hold its September meeting Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. at Salisbury School.

  1. College planning takes center stage

September will bring several opportunities for East Meadow's older students and their families to begin looking beyond high school.

East Meadow High School will host Senior College Planning Night Sept. 15 at 7 p.m., while W.T. Clarke High School's program begins at 6 p.m. Both high schools will then host college mini fairs Sept. 24 and 25.

Families looking ahead to paying for college can attend a virtual Financial Aid Overview on Sept. 24 at 7 p.m.

The district is also focusing on another milestone for teenagers — driving. East Meadow High School will host a “Driving in the Safe Lane” presentation Sept. 22 at 7 p.m., followed by W.T. Clarke High School's presentation Sept. 30 at 7 p.m.

  1. Schools welcome families back with some fun

September isn't all meetings and planning. Several schools will celebrate the start of the year with events bringing students and families together.

Meadowbrook Elementary School will host an ice cream social Sept. 17 at 4:30 p.m., while Parkway will hold a kindergarten ice cream social that day.

Sept. 25 will be especially busy. Barnum Woods will host its Bobcat Bash, Meadowbrook will hold a Food Truck/Welcome Back Night, and McVey's Fall Festival and Welcome Back Social will run from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Parkway will also hold a Welcome Back Gathering.

At East Meadow High School, students can explore ways to get involved during the Clubs and Activities Fair Sept. 25.
