Wrong-way driver charged with DWI

The NCPD arrested a man, 43, of Montego Bay, Jamaica, on Monday at 4:55 a.m. in East Meadow, after he was observed driving a 1998 Ford Explorer eastbound on Hempstead Turnpike in an erratic manner, according to police.

The defendant made a right turn onto Third Street and another right onto Fourth Street, a one-way street, traveling in the wrong direction. Police stopped his vehicle, finding an open container of beer in the front console, and determined that he was driving under the influence of alcohol.

The defendant's girlfriend, 42, and her 2-year-old son were both passengers in the car. The child was released to his mother.

The defendant is charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, driving while intoxicated, consuming alcohol in a motor vehicle and other Vehicle and Traffic Law violations. He was scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead Aug. 1.
