The East Rockaway Board of Education recognized graduating student leaders, longtime staff members and community volunteers during its June 16 meeting, which featured a series of presentations celebrating the accomplishments of students and employees across the district.

The meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance, led by East Rockaway High School student John Ginnochio. High school Principal Rich Schaffer then recognized the Class of 2026’s top academic achievers, valedictorian Charlotte Webster and salutatorian Victoria Schaefer. Although neither student was able to attend the meeting, board members applauded their accomplishments and wished them well as they prepare for college. Webster will attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, while Schaefer will attend Molloy University. Both plan to study biology.

The board also honored three retiring staff members for their years of dedicated service to the district. Rhame Avenue Elementary School teacher Michael Cohen was celebrated by students, family members and colleagues, many of whom wore tie-dyed shirts in recognition of his love for the Grateful Dead. Custodian Alex Loveras was recognized for nearly four decades of service at Rhame Avenue Elementary School and East Rockaway High School, with family members joining the celebration. Teacher’s aide Linda Lindsley, also of Rhame Avenue, was recognized in absentia.

The district also installed its PTA officers for the 2026-27 school year during the organization’s annual Installation Flower Ceremony, recognizing the volunteers who help support students, teachers and school programs throughout the year.

Board members also thanked Sofia Ferkov as she concluded her term as East Rockaway’s first student ex officio board member. They praised her leadership and said she established a strong foundation for future student representatives. Incoming student board member Nora Smith was introduced and is scheduled to be sworn in at the board’s July 8 meeting.

Before adjourning, district officials announced that restoration work on East Rockaway High School’s historic cupola is nearing completion. A community celebration marking the completion of the project is planned for September.
