Fifth graders at Centre Avenue and Rhame Avenue schools put their business skills to the test during East Rockaway’s annual Entrepreneur Days.
Rhame Avenue students opened their marketplace in the school gym on June 2, while Centre Avenue students welcomed shoppers to an outdoor market on the blacktop on June 10.
The event capped a weeks-long project tied to the fifth grade social studies curriculum on business and economics. Students created original products, developed business plans and learned the fundamentals of marketing, design and financial literacy.
In preparation for the event, students designed logos, created advertising materials, printed business cards and built websites to promote their products. Parents, staff and community members visited the student-run booths and could make purchases through QR codes linked to digital storefronts.
The annual tradition gives students an opportunity to apply classroom lessons in a real-world setting while developing communication, collaboration and problem-solving skills.
