The Lynbrook School District has once again been recognized for its commitment to financial transparency, receiving the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association for its annual comprehensive financial report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2025.
The award, considered the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting, is presented to school districts and municipalities that go beyond basic reporting requirements to provide clear, detailed and accessible financial information to the public.
According to Assistant Superintendent for Business Joel Press, Lynbrook has earned the distinction consistently for more than a decade, continuing a tradition that began long before he joined the district in 2023.
“This award is really a testament to our belief in transparency,” Press said. “We provide a lot more information to the community than many other districts do because we believe it’s important that residents have the information they need to make informed decisions.”
Press said the district’s annual comprehensive financial report includes extensive financial data, but also provides information about district operations, programs and goals. One feature he believes sets Lynbrook’s report apart is a detailed letter from the superintendent that gives readers a broader understanding of how the district functions.
The process of preparing the report is a year-round effort involving the business office, district accountant Sylvia Byrne and outside auditors. Work on the next report begins almost immediately after the previous one is completed.
“It’s truly a team effort,” Press said. “Everyone in the business office contributes information, and we work closely with our auditors throughout the process.”
Press said the district’s commitment to transparency extends beyond financial reports. Throughout the year, administrators share budget presentations, board meeting materials and financial updates with residents. Community members are also encouraged to provide feedback through public meetings and discussions with district leaders.
“It is only fair to ask the community to support us if we provide them with all the information they need to make those decisions,” Press said.
He added that the district’s strong voter support for budgets and propositions reflects the trust that has been built through that openness.
“The goal is accuracy, transparency and responsible fiscal stewardship,” Press said. “We take seriously the responsibility of managing taxpayer dollars and making sure the community understands how those resources are being used.”
