The Community League of Garden City South brought residents together for a night of laughter while raising money to support free community events throughout the year.
The organization held a comedy fundraiser Aug. 13 at Governor’s Comedy Club in Levittown, giving neighbors an opportunity to enjoy a night out while supporting the league’s efforts to give back to local families. Tickets were $25 for the first ticket and $15 for a second ticket.
The money raised will help the Community League of Garden City South continue hosting free events for residents, including its annual Christmas tree lighting and other neighborhood activities.
Marge Kelly, president of the Community League of Garden City South, said fundraisers like the comedy night are important because they help the organization continue providing activities without charging residents.
“It is for the stuff that comes up that is just free of charge for everybody,” Kelly said, emphasizing how the fundraiser helps support the league’s community programming.
Kelly later said the event raised more than $1,000, highlighting the support residents have shown for the organization and its efforts.
For those who attended, however, the evening was about more than raising money. It was also a chance for neighbors to step away from their everyday routines, share some laughs and spend time together.
Ellen Andrasick, a member of the community league, said she enjoyed having an opportunity for residents to gather in a casual setting.
“It is nice just to get together and socialize in our community,” Andrasick said.
Mary Ann, another community member who attended, said her love of comedy made the fundraiser an easy event to support.
“I love comedy shows,” she said.
The turnout helped the league raise money for future programming while also giving residents a chance to connect with their neighbors.
The Community League of Garden City South regularly organizes events designed to bring residents together and strengthen connections within the neighborhood. The group’s free community programs give families opportunities to celebrate holidays, meet their neighbors and take part in activities close to home.
Fundraisers are an important part of making those events possible. By raising money through activities such as the comedy night, the league can continue offering programs without placing the cost on the residents who attend them.
For Kelly and other members of the organization, the evening showed how community support can help keep those traditions going.
As the league looks ahead, its goal remains the same: to bring Franklin Square and Garden City South residents together and provide enjoyable events that everyone in the community can take part in.
