For 33 years, Bleyer was an award-winning Newsday reporter with a specialty in history and maritime issues. He has a deep personal involvement in the marine world, literally — as a diver. Indeed, in his talk earlier this month he told of diving to and exploring several boats sunk in waters off Long Island. Also, on the surface of area waters he has long operated a sailboat. more
The good news is we already have the solution, one that has been working for more than a century. According to the Outdoor Foundation, participation in outdoor recreation among girls ages 13 to 17 has fallen to roughly 50 percent. Nature is good for girls, and the absence of it is doing harm. more
Gas prices surged 15.6 percent this month, with regular gas sitting above $4.50 per gallon. Grocery prices made the biggest one-month jump in nearly four years in April. Inflation is up to 3.8 percent, the highest in three years. For the first time since 2023, it’s outpacing wage growth. A good example of what can happen when government puts people before politics happened recently in Albany, when my bill, A.6804, was passed unanimously by both houses of the Legislature. I introduced it after meeting with the NYS Association of County Clerks, which described an ongoing privacy problem with the potential to do great harm to vulnerable people. The measure provides protection to families when they need it most. more
The cause of the closure wasn’t the beach at all — it was the stream that runs west of the beach. When Ralph Suozzi was mayor, Nassau County began testing Crescent Beach for bacteria in the water, and detected levels 1,000 times higher than the permissible amount. more
Housing has now been turned into a partisan weapon, when it should be a shared responsibility. Meanwhile, the consequences are very real. Families are struggling to stay on Long Island. Seniors are being priced out of communities they spent decades building. Young people can’t afford to put down roots, let alone raise families. more
