Five Towns and Atlantic Beach impacted by snow storm

With at least 8 to 12 inches of snow falling across Long Island, there is a winter storm warning in effect that was issued by the National Weather Service.

Heavy snow is expected and very cold temperatures. Both Nassau and Suffolk counties are under a state of emergency.

"Stay home on Sunday if you can. We're talking about significant snow. We're talking about whiteouts. We're talking about freezing weather and wind. If you don't absolutely have to go out on Sunday, please stay home," County Executive Blakeman said in a news release.

In Cedarhurst, Mayor Benjamin Weinstock has noted the importance of keeping vehicles off village streets and not to shovel snow into the roadway, and clear snow from nearby fire hydrants.

As snow removal continues throughout the storm, please place your property’s snow on your property, do not discard it into the roadway, Weisntock stated in a message in an email from the village.

In Atlantic Beach, residents were urged to keep their heat set to at least 60 degrees to prevent frozen pipes and to allow faucets on exterior walls to drip slightly, according to village officials.

The primary focus of the Public Works Department is to make the village roads passible, upon secondary clean ups, the plows will do a curb to curb clean up.

Weisntock is asking residents and others to get all vehicles off of the roadway throughout the storm in order to ease the cleanup process.

Calling the Public Works Department, or the police department  to remind them of their responsibilities will only tie up phone lines for emergency calls. Please stay home and stay safe, Beach said.
