In recognition of Earth Day on April 22, the South Shore Conservation Society and several other organizations and legislators will be working together to clean the Brookside Preserve on Sunday, May 3, after it was delayed for rain.
Starting at 10 a.m., participants will gather at the Brookside Preserve, located in Freeport and Baldwin, and will take up the trash and waste that presently exists in the nature preserve. Garbage bags and rubber gloves will be provided to all, while participants are encouraged to bring pokers, rakes, grabbers, heavy duty gloves and other supplemental tools to assist in the clean-up.
To safeguard against ticks and other hazards, attendees are also asked to wear long sleeve tops, pants, socks and other attire that does not expose skin. Pets are asked to be left at home.
“District 6 is blessed with some of our region’s most beautiful green spaces and aquatic preserves, and it is imperative for each of us to do our part to enhance and preserve them for future generations,” Legislator Debra Mulé said.
Joining the South Shore Conservation Society and Mulé in the clean-up effort will be Operation SPLASH, the Freeport-Merrick Rotary Club, The Green Army, the Girls Scouts of Nassau County Freeport chapter, the Environmental Rotaract of Nassau County, students from the Freeport and Baldwin High Schools, Legislator Scott Davis, Assemblywoman Judy Griffin, State Senator Siela Bynoe and more.
Those interested in joining the volunteer effort are asked to RSVP with Legislator Mulé’s office at 516-571-6206.
