The South Shore Guidance Center, which is part of the EPIC Family of Human Service Agencies, marked a major milestone this past week by gathering hundreds of Long Islanders at Freeport’s Cow Meadow Park for the 10th Annual Spring Fling Dog Walk for Mental Wellness.

The anniversary event brought together community members, local officials and their four-legged companions in a shared show of support for mental health awareness and services.

“This year’s walk was especially meaningful as we celebrated ten years of building connections and advancing mental health awareness in our community,” Lisa Burch, president and CEO of EPIC Family of Human Service Agencies, said. “Seeing so many people come out in support year after year is a powerful reminder that there is a need to keep mental health a priority here on Long Island.”

The event, which acknowledges May as Mental Health Awareness Month, brought together Long Islanders for a lively day along Freeport’s waterfront, featuring activities, entertainment and opportunities to connect with South Shore Guidance Center staff and learn more about available mental health services. Families and attendees of all ages took part in the festivities, creating a welcoming and supportive environment centered on wellness and community.

In recognition of the event’s milestone anniversary, Village of Freeport Mayor Robert Kennedy and his dog Mickey served as grand marshals, leading participants along the route.

Adding to the day’s atmosphere were special performances by the Freeport High School Modern Music Ensemble, NJROTC, Color Guard, John W. Dodd Middle School’s Select Chorale and SWA Steppers and the Leo F. Giblyn Elementary School Hot Steppers.

“Our community continues to show up in such a meaningful way for this event,” Irene Rodgers, EPIC Family of Human Service Agencies’ chief development and engagement officer, said. “The enthusiasm and support received during the walk reinforces how important it is to create spaces where people can come together, have fun and feel connected while supporting a critical cause.”

The EPIC Family of Human Service Agencies is comprised of three organizations; South Shore Guidance Center, EPIC Long Island and the Epilepsy Foundation Long Island. These organizations provide advocacy and healthcare resources for communities throughout the region. The South Shore Guidance Center in Freeport is an outpatient behavioral health clinic within the EPIC Family of Human Service Agencies, offering a full range of services to meet the needs of children, adolescents, adults and families across Long Island.
