Anchors away on the Nautical Mile

Freeport’s waterfront stretch serves up cruises, cuisine, culture and coastal charm all in one lively destination

Posted

Freeport’s Nautical Mile, located along Woodcleft Avenue, is one of the South Shore’s most recognizable destinations, a lively waterfront corridor lined with restaurants, shops, environmental organizations and family-friendly attractions.

Once home to working docks and fish markets, the area has evolved into a community hub that blends recreation, education and waterfront scenery. Whether a longtime resident or a first-time visitor, there are many ways to spend a full day along the Mile.

 Cruise the Bay
One of the most popular ways to experience the Nautical Mile is from the water. Charter boats and sightseeing cruises depart regularly from Freeport, offering fishing trips, seal and whale-watching excursions and sunset cruises across the bay. Operators such as the Captain Lou Fleet provide a range of outings that highlight the natural beauty of the South Shore. Calm waters and wide-open views make for a relaxed way to take in the coastline. Private charters are also available for group outings and special occasions.

Dine on Fresh Seafood by the Water

Waterfront dining is a defining feature of the Nautical Mile. Restaurants along the strip serve everything from casual fried seafood to more refined seafood and steak dishes, all paired with views of the marina. Many establishments offer outdoor seating during the warmer months, along with live music that adds to the atmosphere. The mix of casual and upscale dining makes the area appealing for both quick stops and longer meals. Raw bars, fish-and-chips and fresh local catches remain staples throughout the corridor.

Visit the Sea Horse Gift Shop on the Nautical Mile
For more than 30 years, the Sea Horse Gift Shop has been a longtime fixture at 165 Woodcleft Ave. The shop is operated by the Kaland family, who have deep ties to Freeport and its maritime history. The store occupies a historic beach shack originally moved from Zach’s Bay in the 1930s and has become known for its coastal-themed gifts, shells, souvenirs and nautical keepsakes. It has remained a seasonal destination for generations of visitors, with family members continuing to run the business during the busy summer months.

Learn About Local Waters at Operation SPLASH
Also located along the Mile, Operation SPLASH, which stands for Stop Polluting Littering And Save Harbors, is a volunteer-based environmental organization focused on protecting the South Shore’s waterways. The group organizes harbor cleanups, educational programs and community outreach efforts aimed at improving water quality and marine habitats. Visitors can learn more about ongoing conservation efforts through exhibits at its headquarters or participate in local cleanup initiatives. The organization also advocates for long-term environmental stewardship across Long Island’s coastal communities.

Enjoy Ice Cream and a Walk Along the Docks

A simple walk along the marina remains one of the most popular ways to enjoy the Nautical Mile. Visitors often stop for ice cream before strolling past docked boats, fishing vessels and charter fleets. The pace is relaxed, with waterfront views and a steady flow of harbor activity. On weekends, the area often features live music, car shows or community gatherings, adding to the lively atmosphere. The combination of open water and local activity makes it a popular stop for families and casual visitors.

Experience Nautical Mile Festivals and Events
The Nautical Mile hosts a full calendar of events throughout the year, drawing visitors from across Long Island. Seasonal festivals and summer street fairs feature food vendors, live entertainment and family activities. One of the most anticipated annual events is the Fall Festival and Fire Expo, which includes costume parades, fire truck displays, Trunk or Treat activities and local vendors. Fireworks displays and themed celebrations throughout the warmer months further highlight the area’s role as a regional gathering place.

Catch a Show at Sparkle on Stage

Located on the Mile, Sparkle on Stage Performing Arts brings live theater and performing arts education to the waterfront. The community-based organization offers youth productions, musicals and drama workshops for performers of all ages. Its programming provides both training and performance opportunities in an inclusive setting. Families can attend local productions or enroll children in classes designed to build confidence and creativity. The organization contributes a cultural element to the otherwise maritime-focused corridor.

From waterfront dining and boat excursions to environmental education and live theater, the Nautical Mile continues to serve as one of Freeport’s most active and diverse destinations, offering visitors a mix of recreation, culture and coastal scenery throughout the year.
