In celebration of International Day of Yoga on June 14, students at J.W. Dodd Middle School in Freeport Public Schools participated in their yearly endeavor to enhance their strength, focus, and inner peace through yoga.

This year’s event paid tribute to retiring Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham, recognizing his dedication to student well-being and mindfulness throughout his tenure.

The program began with a tribute to Dr. Kuncham for his steadfast commitment to promoting student mental health. J.W. Dodd Middle School Principal Johane Ligondé praised him for advocating wellness initiatives, incorporating mindfulness into the curriculum at all grade levels, and introducing programs such as SKY Schools to the district.

“The practice of unity and peace through yoga would not be possible without our own visionary leader, Dr. Kishore Kuncham,” said Ms. Ligondé. “

When Dr. Kuncham began bringing wellness programs to our schools it was not popular. We know the courage it took to bring them to us. Because of this, we have created a culture of peace – internal peace, school peace and community peace. Thank you for your courage, your boldness and for challenging us to challenge ourselves to be better every single day.”

In an inspiring moment, Dr. Kuncham was further honored by receiving the first J.W. Dodd Middle School Peace Ambassador Award. Additionally, the International Association for Human Values and SKY Schools presented him with the Culture of Peace Award, acknowledging his efforts in fostering peace within individuals, schools, and communities, ultimately striving for global harmony.

“This was an unexpected surprise and I cherish all of the years I have had here with you. Thank you for the special honors. You make me very proud, and I know you will do great things that will change the world,” said Dr. Kuncham.

“You have the skills to do exactly what you set out to do and practicing yoga will expand and enrich your efforts to achieve your goals. It helps make you the very best and gives you the best version of yourself.”

After the recognition, students and staff engaged in basic yoga poses such as downward dog, tree pose, warrior one, and more. Yoga instructor Maddie Fontaine then led the group through a sequence designed to encourage focus and strength, ending with deep breathing and peaceful meditation.

As the event concluded, laughter filled the room as students and staff shared their feelings and excitement to continue the school day.

J.W. Dodd Middle School’s annual International Day of Yoga Celebration aims to empower students to manage stress, improve focus, and navigate adolescence with enhanced well-being, a focus made possible by Dr. Kuncham’s leadership.
