Freeport and other Nassau County drivers are being advised to avoid the westbound side of State Route 27, more commonly known as the Sunrise Highway, for the next four weeks, as two of the three lanes will be closed for overnight construction.
Last month the New York State Department of Transportation announced it would be redoing the pavement of the eastbound lanes along the Sunrise Highway. The department confirmed in a press release last week that the westbound lanes between County Line Road in the Town of Babylon in Suffolk County and the Wantagh State Parkway in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County will be subjected to overnight lane closures.
The lane closures began on Tuesday, Sept. 8, and will continue from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. on weeknights for approximately four more weeks.
Construction activities are bound to be weather-dependent and the extent and duration of the construction may change based on these conditions.
