As the skies over Freeport prepare to burst into a kaleidoscope of colors, the community is abuzz with anticipation for the eighth annual Nautical Mile Fireworks Show, set to illuminate the night on July 5 at approximately 9p.m.

This dazzling event, a joint endeavor by the Freeport Chamber of Commerce and the Village of Freeport, promises an unforgettable spectacle for residents and visitors alike.

The fireworks are can be viewed from Seabreeze Park, providing a stunning backdrop along the picturesque Nautical Mile.

Fireworks by Grucci, the acclaimed sixth-generation family-owned and operated fireworks company and holder of the Guiness world record for the largest fireworks display ever recorded, will be the ones conducting the show.

The show can be viewed from numerous vantage points along the waterfront, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the display safely and comfortably.

Organizers recommend Seabreeze Park and surrounding restaurants as prime viewing spots, but also note that not everyone will be able to access these locations due to their popularity on event ‘night, so make reservations.

“Pretty much anywhere on the Nautical Mile you can see the fireworks towards the end,” said Ken Dookram, president of the Freeport Chamber of Commerce.

The process involved in getting this event off the ground is led by the Chamber of Commerce and the Village but also involves a myriad of other entities including the local police, fire marshals, the Coast Guard, and even Kennedy Airport, due to the proximity of the launch area to flight paths.

This event is more than just a display of pyrotechnics; it represents a significant community effort and serves as a thank you from the local merchants and the village authorities to the people of Freeport.

It’s a celebration of community spirit, bringing together families, boosting local businesses, and enhancing the overall vitality of the area.

Ivan Sayle, a past president of the Freeport Chamber of Commerce starts the fireworks show eight years ago.

“It’s a very daunting task to involve all these agencies (such as the Coast Guard or Kennedy Airport because the fireworks go out on the water,” Sayles said.

About his favorite part of the event Sayles added “I love the countdown (to the fireworks launch)… that’s the most enjoyable part for me.”

For those attending, the event isn’t just about the fireworks; it’s about the experience of community and celebration. The countdown to the fireworks, led by children and watched by smiling families, encapsulates the joy and unity that such events foster.

The rain date for the event is July 7.

“The Village of Freeport and Chamber of Commerce have joined together and sponsored the fireworks display on July 5, 2024,” said Mayor Kennedy. “Please join us on the Nautical Mile for a great fireworks.”

“Bring your entire family, enjoy dinner prior to the great fireworks show,” the Mayor added.
