Donald Trump’s Nassau Coliseum rally gets intense security after assassination attempt

Security for Donald Trump's rally at the Nassau Coliseum on Wednesday, will be tighter than usual after Sunday's assassination attempt on the former president, the second in the past 2 months.

"We regularly have international figures that come to Nassau County,” Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman said on Monday. “This is nothing new. Our police departments and all of our other agencies are prepared and we’re ready.

“Let me first say that the rally on Wednesday will be at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale," Blakeman added. "The doors will open at 3 p.m. However, I want to stress this, people should get there very early who want to attend the rally.”

Multiple units will be mobilized, including the Bureau of Special Operations, aviation, canine, emergency services, highway patrol and the special investigation squad and the county police's intelligence center will be full staffed.

“We have the finest police department in the United States, incredibly educated, well-trained, and experienced," Blakeman said. "And we believe that we will be able to keep not only the president and his guests and staff safe, but the general public as well.”

He also stressed that the rally is an event being run by the Trump campaign.

“They are paying for all expenses at the Coliseum,” Blakeman said. “They are controlling the site. Nassau County is only providing the protection and other services, as well as our volunteer firefighters.”

“Our federal partners are running the security for the event,” he said. “The Secret Service is in control. However, they are working closely with us. They are working with other federal agencies. The State Police has been every helpful, NYPD, MTA Police, there are very many organizations that are involved in the planning for a trip like this. And again, we’re confident that the president will be safe, and everybody that is attending the rally will be safe.”

“This will be the safest place in the country on (Wedneday),” said police commissioner Patrick Ryder at the podium.

Ryder also said that the Coliseum's parking lot will be completely off-limits on Tuesday night. “Nobody will be in the lot, nobody will be in the Coliseum. We do a complete sweep that night, we do a complete sweep again in the morning.”

Blakeman said he was not able to comment on whether there had been any threats made.

“That’s information that the Secret Service and PD intelligence would have,” he said. “And that’s something that they would keep to themselves for obvious reasons.”

In addition, Nassau police have put out a traffic advisory regarding heavier than usual traffic at 3.p.m. on Wednesday around the Coliseum between Hempstead Turnpike, Charles Lindbergh Boulevard, Earle Ovington boulevard, and Glen Curtiss Boulevard.

Motorists should expect delays and and use alternate routes when possible.
