Roosevelt High School and the rest of the Roosevelt Union Free School District celebrated their annual homecoming weekend with pep rallies, a community parade and a football game. The weekend offered a time for school and community pride for all who attended.
Students and staff members kicked off the festivities on Oct. 9 with a pep rally at Roosevelt High School. The parade and varsity football game against Levittown’s MacArthur High School followed on Oct. 10.
Throughout the week leading up to the game, all five Roosevelt public schools—Centennial Avenue Elementary School, Washington Rose Elementary School, Ulysses Byas Elementary School, Roosevelt Middle School and Roosevelt High School—showed off their school pride with festive Spirit Week activities. The variety of themed dress-up days included Pajama Day, Jersey Day, Twin Day, Decades Day and BBQ Dads versus Soccer Moms day, which gave students fun ways to be creative and participate in spirit building activities.
This year’s homecoming theme was “Roosevelt’s Great Animal Adventure,” with each school having a parade float that reflected the theme. Among those on floats were this year’s homecoming king Jefferson Santos and homecoming queen Genisus Rivera.
“Homecoming is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our students, showcase our school pride and bring the Roosevelt community together,” Roosevelt Superintendent Shawn Wightman said. “The enthusiasm and community support throughout the festivities reflect the strong connections that make our district special.”
The Roosevelt Rough Riders’ matchup against the MacArthur Generals was a competitive defensive battle in the first half with the Generals eventually pulling away by a score of 19-6. This was the Rough Riders’ third consecutive loss for the season, but they were able to emphatically rebound the following week against the Baldwin High School Bruins by a score of 35-0.
The Rough Riders now have a record of 2-4 on the year with upcoming matches against the Valley Stream Central Eagles on the road on Oct. 24, and then back home on Oct. 30 against the Calhoun Colts of Merrick, according to MaxPreps.
