The most recent class of Freeport High School graduates got a little bit bigger after 43 students earned their diplomas as summer graduates. This brings the school’s Class of 2026 total to 598.

Freeport High School held its summer graduation the morning of Aug. 21 in its Performing Arts Center. Parents, teachers and other supporters filed into the auditorium to cheer on the graduates for reaching the end of their high school journeys.

Out of the 43 summer graduates, eight got to participate in the Friday morning ceremony and walk across the stage with the stage with their diploma cases. The cap and gown clad students were Christian Adams, Isryal Boucher, Johanna Caraballo Collado, Angel Cepeda, Logan Martinez, Guillermo Mejia Gómez, Brenda San Pedro Zayas and Carlos Tavarez Gomez.

Summer school coordinators Rafaela Santana and Latisa Graham were some of the first people to congratulate the students during the ceremony.

“Remember that there is no one certain path to success,” Graham, who is also an assistant principal at Freeport High School, said during the graduation. “There are many steps that you take to success. Keep moving forward, continue to work hard and believe in what you are capable of accomplishing.”

Another assistant principal, Sergio Argueta, congratulated the students, some of whom he said he knew very well personally, while also offering advice. He emphasized that even though the students had not finished their academic requirements in time for the standard June graduation, their completion of high school is still an accomplishment worth celebrating.

“There’s an old adage, ‘you make plans and God laughs,’” Argueta said to students during the ceremony. “There’s something beautiful to learn from individuals who have faith. Individuals who can believe in things they haven’t seen… It may require you to wait a little bit. It may require you to make different choices and different decisions, but the most important part of this all is to not stop.”

Fia Davis, the recently reinstated superintendent of Freeport Public Schools was one of several administrative representatives in attendance for the graduation, including school board President Michael Pomerico and Vice President Gabriela Castillo. Davis addressed the students with warmth and excitement for them, as well as herself, as she acknowledged that this was her first Freeport graduation since being hired in 2024.

Davis told the students to continue to be mindful of their choices moving forward and that they should be appreciative for many of the choices that were made previously by loved ones that were in the students’ favor.

“You sit here in caps and gowns today because you made some choices,” Davis said. “There were family members, teachers, people who loved you, believed in you, who maybe even prayed for you, and you didn’t know it. But you got to choose, as you had to do the work. You had to show up. You had to make the decision. And so the journey continues, and the choices will continue.”

The doors to Freeport High School and other Freeport public schools will open on Wednesday, Sept. 2, to begin the 2026-2027 school year and prepare new sets of students for graduation.
