Veteran’s Day was celebrated by William Clinton Story American Legion Post 342 at the Freeport Memorial Library at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11. The ceremony, while not elaborate, was well attended by Post 342 members and local officials, one of whom, Mayor Robert Kennedy, is himself a Navy veteran.

Among the memorable words spoken at the podium were those of Sergeant at Arms Marie Houanche, a U.S. Army veteran, who said, “No matter our race, creed, or culture, we all wear the same uniform, and we are one people on the battlefield with a common purpose. We have to unite as one nation under God, with liberty and justice for all.”

Second Vice Commander Dave Jones, a U.S. Army veteran of Operation Desert Storm in 1991, said, "Courage is one of the virtues born of war.”

First Vice Commander Jarvis Eason, U.S. Army, reminded listeners that Post 342 manifests the philosophy of veterans everywhere, saying, "Our service to the country doesn’t stop with the end of our military service.”

Herald Photographer Christina Daly caught moments that reflected the beauty, the solemnity, and the meaning of the ceremony.
